Warhammer: the Old World is pretty fun

 Got halfway through a game of Warhammer Old World yesterday, it really does feel like a solid balance of the various WHFB editions I grew up with. This is my third game this year, after more than a decade of zero Warhammer gaming (unless you count using Mordheim rules with historical minis).

Between combat and panic, I'm now down to a third of my army (possibly closer to half if I clutch out some rally attempts at the beginning of my next turn), but while my opponent hasn't taken too many hits yet, there are three fanatics right in the center of his army.

Hoping to wrap this up Thursday, it'll be an uphill struggle for my greenskins, but stranger things have happened!

Trukks and Terrain

In addition to painting the trukks, I've also started to refocus on terrain. I got a foam cutter for Christmas, and since then I've bought a variety of supplies including a grass mat, a sky posterboard, and some trees.

I've also made some walls out of coffee stirrers, small bits of cut foam, and misc. bits. I'm trying to roughly match them to the GW plastic walls I got a while back, and while it's not to hard to see which is which, I'm pleased enough with the overall effect.

Switching gears back to Space Orks, here are a couple old trukk sculpts that needed extension so they wouldn't look *completely* ridiculous. Waaagh!!!

So what little painting I've done lately has mostly been for Warhammer 40k, and has also been pretty basic. But today I assembled a bunch of burna boyz, each one at least a smidge converted, and I'm pretty pleased with the lot!

Yup, pretty pleased with how these colors are working out. Gotta go back and fix the boss' gold toof and the one ork's tongue...

I'm Back! WAAAAAAAGH!!!

So, I've gotten basically no hobby work done since Spring. But I'm trying to get back in the groove, so here is a test mini for my big impending 40k Ork Army repaint. The one with the knife is the actual test mini, the other one is from a few years ago, my first attempt at a bare minimum army repaint.

I will also be resuming various historical projects, so watch this space even if goofy sci-fi isn't your cup of tea...

Literary Villains (and other personalities)

To start, here's Cardinal Richelieu and Vlad III "Dracula".

Dumas' villain is from Warlord Games, and Stoker's from The Assault Group.

The Dracula figure also comes with a boyar (armed with a neat triple-headed flail) and a noblewoman (not yet painted, not shown). Last night I also painted a set of heroes to oppose these villains: Stickler Mitchell and Young Megan from Warlord Games, and Bertha Bestraufrung(sp?) from Games Workshop's old Sisters of Sigmar range.

I think Drac and his buddy look pretty neat next to Warlord's voynuks...

Konrad von Carstein

A model I've been meaning to paint since getting back into Mordheim. This figure is completely unconverted, and one of my favorite GW models ever. He should provide a difficult challenge for any witch-hunters or treasure-seeking mercenaries that dare cross him...

Pan Twardowski

I'd hoped to feature this guy in some Halloween Mordheim, but I didn't get him done nearly in time, and now I don't have the energy to play. So here he his, famed sorcerer and alchemist, Pan Jan Twardowski. You can get the gist of this folkloric character from his wikipedia page, though it doesn't explain why he rides a chicken.

The chicken is a cheap toy from a dollar-store farm animal set, embiggened with greenstuff. I wanted to make it a specifically Polish breed, and it just so happens that there is a breed called the Polish Chicken that is quite visually striking.

The guy himself is a old GW Kislevite from the waist up (except for the sword blade and feather from Warlord plastics). His legs are from Wargames Factory's WSS plastics, with plenty of greenstuff to make the two pieces fit the weird chicken shape.

And I'd be lying if I said I didn't have help on this project from another icon of Polish culture...

Mordheim Monster Mash

Well, my costume was pretty much finished Friday night, so I needed to find another spooky diversion to last until Halloween. Fortunately, Mordheim is the spookiest, so I wrote up some warbands and brought up a small table and set it up for a quick solo game. Although, to be frank, I don't have enough terrain to really get the proper effect.

These warbands are completely book legal, although some of the other ones that might show up later have been slightly house-ruled to fit my collection.

Pan Blaszkowicz and his men were exploring an abandoned village. Leaving his musketeers and their sergeant in the village, to provide covering fire if needed, he went to investigate the church ruins with his loyal pancerni comrades. But once they left the relative safety of the village walls, the forces of evil attacked.

Wintry Witchfinder

My original plan was to reveal these models over the course of a gameplay post, but the tables here are still cluttered with holiday stuff, I still haven't remembered to print out the witchfinder tokens, and I'm just generally impatient.

So here is the most powerful witch of all, with a pair of summonable minions:

And here's a quick WiP shot. I built the snowmen from unpopped popcorn kernels, foam scraps and Warhammer dryad arms.

assorted Vile Abominations

Here are four evil spellcasters for Witchfinder General. I haven't gotten around to buying actual witch miniatures yet, so these are all necromancers from my preexisting fantasy collection. Fortunately for my half-assed attempts at thematic consistency, witch trials in Eastern Europe tended to persecute men at a higher rate than women, unlike the stereotypical Western trials.

And here are two more ghouls, of a slightly different breed than the last batch.

The ghouls (originally grimlocks) and the scythe-bearing witch are from the Reaper miniatures line that accompanied 3rd edition, I think. The other witch guys are all GW.
